Many U.S. adaptations of British TV shows never live up to the original, but that's not the case with this makeover by John Wells ("ER"), who shifted the action from Manchester, England, to the South Side of Chicago. Both versions revolved around the wildly dysfunctional Gallagher clan, headed by patriarch Frank (William H. Macy in the remake), who never met a drink or a drug he didn't like and would roll over his kids without blinking. The Chicago Gallaghers end their story tonight, having matched the British original's 11-season run.
